Response from Readers of My Writings
Dwight Nichols
We are in the twenty first century (about 2,000 years since the death of Jesus) and, any way you slice it, the following comments indicate a need for the Gospel to be taught in a manner that people believe, understand and embody.
Mostly, the comments are from people who read some of my writings on my web site and from people who read my first book, Listening to Ourselves — The Key to Everything that Matters.
To protect the privacy of respondents, I have not listed their names, and I have not included any details that would identify the person responding. I appreciate very much the response from these readers. Their support and encouragement had an impact on my writing the books Life’s Greatest Lesson: The Message Jesus Intended for Us and Commune with Your Heart: The Only Way to Find Peace, Joy and Happiness.
Responses from Viewers of My Web Site
Following the publication of my first book, Listening to Ourselves: The Key to Everything that Matters, I began writing essays and posting them on my Web Site. Unlike testimonials commonly used by publishers to promote books, the following responses were unsolicited:
WOW!! — I have learned more about God and religion in the 20 minutes spent on your site than years and years of bible school and sermons — good job!!!
Bravo! I have been a “Christian” for many years. I am the son of a Baptist minister. I have known for several years that most people do not understand Jesus’ teachings. I am active in a Baptist church, but do not like being called “Baptist” or even a “Christian” for that matter. Most leaders in the church do not understand Jesus’ teachings and therefore mislead many.
Thank you for your site. Its content blew me away and renewed my hope. Talk about getting straight to the point. It articulated what I couldn’t put words to, and I identified with it. I will be revisiting the site to absorb it more.
Thanks! I am only 12 years old. I read everything. It really got to me. Thank you and God.
Wow! What a site! Felt like I was in Heaven! What might be your educational background? Gimme more.
I am a witch and have been for several years. During my teenage years I called myself a Christian. However, as I grew older, I became disheartened with Christianity. It’s astonishing, the hatred from some of these “Christians.” I believe that the spirit, which shone in Jesus, Buddha and others, is very much alive and can shine from any of us if we give it open space. … I’m thankful for all those who do more good than harm.
Fantastic site! I just happened by while surfing, but I came to stay (a kind of paraphrase?). I have put this in my favorites; so I will be back again and again. Hopefully as we change ourselves, Mother Earth can begin Her healing.
After I read three of your articles, I heard this voice inside saying, ‘Yes, yes, yes! This is it. I’ve found it! I’ve found it!’ I have read many books, attended several success seminars, and have been motivated and inspired for years. I know you are speaking the Truth and that this is the answer I have been looking for. Thanks!!!
I must say that it is a pleasure to find you at this time. … It is ironic that something so well hidden to human sight should have clues written everywhere in the Universe as to how to find it. … I’m impressed that you possess the courage and the talents to publish a book on this principle without receiving death threats.
I was raised a Christian but no longer am active. I did learn a lot about the Bible and have read it cover to cover five times. I’ve investigated other religions, the new age stuff, and have not been satisfied with the dogma, rituals, or the superficial approach to spirituality. The words of your Web Pages though seem to resonate with me. Thanks.
Your Website is very wonderful and sounds much the way we American Indians, as well as our Asian ancestors, believe. If all people could accept the truth, this world would be in peace and harmony.
The major cause of all my problems has been the Christian religion. I’m from a small nation, which has many social dysfunctions because of Christianity. Because of the Christian religion I will never be able to worship, as did my ancestors who once roamed this land. Because of European domination through Christianity, I have been striped of all my beliefs and given a false hope in God. The only way for my people to adapt to this change has been to become alcoholics and withdraw from society.
Your comments about Christianity rang so true to me. There is no question that the soul thirsts for the true teaching of Jesus. I am 35 years old and have regularly attended church and done everything as a church-goer, but really listen and understand. I am now beginning to search out for myself the truths of Jesus; your article was most helpful.
I have read only two topics from your website and it is the most amazing page I have seen so far! What you convey represents everything I believe in. I’m so glad someone who shares my views had a strong enough voice to speak the truth. I think you are very enlightened and blessed.
How encouraging to find someone who has found, and so clearly articulated, the truth about the truth. I agree … God has been inspiring us always, and for generations. I experienced intense frustration with denominational churches’ lack of capacity to open their hearts to truth. … Who are you? Where are you from? How did you get where you are? Is there a site about you?
Just wanted to let you know that your website really encouraged me and gave me hope. … Just to let you know that I enjoyed reading about it all and that I am going back to reread it again!
I just finished reading a lot of the stuff on your website ... man that was great and uplifting ... wow! ... I am glad I chose your site ... I had to express my enjoyment of your site... I hope you continue to add to your site because I enjoyed every word of it.
I just stumbled upon your “Our purpose on this Planet Earth” website, and I must say excellent work! It’s rare to find such a clear view of reality!
I am a prime example of just about all of what you speak of. I will be visiting your site often to refresh and to deal with my anger. Thank you.
I thought I’d let you know that after reading your articles I have noticed a big change in my outlook, as have others. And I know that your way of conveying information works for at least one person. I will work on others and point as many your way as possible. Thanks again.
Thanks for the great website … and can I EVER use it!!!
I wanted to thank you for such a great website. The section “Why Christianity isn’t working” really cleared up my confusion about Christianity. … The truth is beautiful. A way of thinking is that we’re in a way in Heaven already! "This is it." That idea blew my mind. … Today I found love, truth, and wisdom on your website. I have great fortune in coming across your website. Thank you very much again.
I like your Website. I want to share these kinds of teachings with my children. It’s good to know that there are other people out there who respect the truth.
I was raised a Christian, but lately have begun to doubt that I believe what I believe, because that is what I was told to believe. I just wanted to thank you for having such an influence on me. … You are truly my inspiration.
I was raised in a Baptist church and experienced the rituals and ceremonies required to “save” myself from eternal damnation. … I haven’t been to church since I was in my early teens. I have faith in God and Jesus; however, I feel like a lost soul. I find contradictions in what I’ve been taught, and everything seems so obscure and vague.
What a great page! Thanks! I used it in my research for one of my sermons.
Responses from Readers of my first book, Listening to Ourselves: The Key to Everything that Matters
A college teacher, who read the book twice, wrote me a letter, saying: “I have been richly blessed by your book. When I read the book this time, it was a major breakthrough for me. I have given the book as a gift to a couple of friends and have recommended it to many others.”
A man called and said, “I have not finished reading your book yet, and already it has helped me very much. Some friends and work associates have noticed a tremendous difference in me … even noticing a difference in my voice and the way I talk.”
A woman called long-distance from California, saying something to the effect that Listening to Ourselves was the most helpful book she had read. She said her apartment was filled with books, astrological charts, and so forth, and now she realized that all that stuff was useless.
A man from Hong Kong commented briefly, “Absolutely fantastic! A great book!” He inquired about the cost, including the shipping charges to Hong Kong, of ten books for stocking at a center.
A college teacher said: “While reading your book I became angry and put the book down. Later, I realized that it was hitting close to home. There was something at which I should take a close look. I finished reading your book, and I agree with what you are saying. You are right.”
A man in Monaco ordered a copy of Listening to Ourselves. Although neither he nor his secretary commented about the book, his secretary ordered four more copies for him.
A book store owner from out of state ordered six copies of Listening to Ourselves. She said that a customer had read the book and told her that she must stock the book in her store.
Special and Miscellaneous Responses
A woman, who ordered Listening to Ourselves from Amazon, responded by e-mail, saying:
“I have just read your book and it is by far the most intriguing bunch of words I’ve ever seen under one cover. Every sentence makes a profound statement. … Why isn’t this book mandatory reading in our homes, the schools, and the churches?
The message is so profound, and yet so simple. … Your book is as though you have formed a personal relationship with your readers, as you expose their very soul and give them no where to hide. I can only hope that your talent will be acknowledged in a way that reaches the masses.
You found a way to reach the very fiber of my existence. I’ve read the Bible, and I respect the Bible, but I’ve never been intrigued enough to take the time to study the Bible. Your book allowed me to connect with God in a way that I had never been able to do. Already you have touched so many lives in a positive, enriching way.
Thank you for putting something into print that has the potential to make a lasting difference in my life. I have recommended this book to several friends and we are now discussing things we would have never shared without the book. Your insight may save a few relationships — and for that we thank you. If we all learned to accept this HUGE responsibility for our own feelings and behavior, what a world of difference our lives would make.
Your book has literally saved our marriage. I told my husband either 'read the book or leave.' He was extremely defensive and spent two weeks on the first 12 pages. Now the book has curled edges, because he continues to read and reread. He credits you with helping him find the answers he was searching for. The doctors, the church, the Bible, his family, his wife, his employer — no one or nothing was providing him with the strength or knowledge to overcome his frustration and anger.
Your book broke it down and put it in language that was very basic, profound, and simplistic. … You said it all and you said it very effectively. I wish I could express to you what a remarkable difference your book has made in our lives.”
A reader wrote the following review:
“I suffer from anxiety and panic and I don’t know how or why I found this book...but it’s been a Godsend. I have learned so much about myself within the pages of this book.
The only thing that bothered me about this book is that it’s not as well written as some books I have read. However, it just makes you feel like someone ‘normal’...someone not perfect, wrote this book. Almost like a friend talking to you from its pages. It is an easy read and very effective. It’s spiritual without being condescending...it’s spiritual without being overly religious.
I recommend this book to anyone on the journey to discovering themselves, especially if you are battling anxiety, panic or any other psychological problems such as OCD, PTSD or phobia in general.” (A reviewer posted this review on Amazon.)
Comments from teachers (including Ministers) who read the manuscript of my book, Life's Greatest Lesson: The Message Jesus Intended for Us:
A religious teacher who had taught for many years called me a few times while reading the manuscript. I believe it is fair to say that had difficulty understanding and accepting some of the things I said. When he finished reading the manuscript, he said, “Now I know what you are saying. I agree. You should be shouting this from the roof tops.” On two other occasions, he said to me, “You should be shouting this from the roof tops.”
Fundamentalist Ministers
“I’m not saying you are right, and I’m not saying you are wrong. As for me, I will continue reading and studying my Bible.”
A young Minister who knew the Bible from cover to cover the way fundamentalists believe the Holy Scriptures said, “You have some very good points here. I agree with about everything you have said. I’m considering going back to college and getting a degree in psychology, so that I can help the members of my church more.”
General responses from a few selected people who are not fundamentalists
In response to the question, “Do you agree with what I am saying?” the responses were along the following line: “Oh sure,” “You are preaching to the choir,” “absolutely, no question.”
A college teacher responded: “The teaching of Christianity is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on humankind.”
Again, all the foregoing comments indicate a need for the Gospel to be taught in a manner that people can believe, understand and embody.
