The Gospel that Would Transform the World
Know this to be true: If we, individually and collectively, believed and did what Jesus said, we, our families, our nation and the very world itself would be transformed. We would be in harmony with truth, God, and nature … the way things are meant to be. The entire world would be in peace and harmony. Unfortunately, fundamentalism has had a stranglehold on the teachings of Christianity for about 2,000 years, leading people astray from the gospel of the kingdom of God (the gospel of peace, truth, love, and joy) that Jesus preached. Jesus said it himself, “The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached” (Luke 16:16). As it is, people are doing today what Jesus said people were doing about 2,000 years ago: “People honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups, and many other such like things ye do. … Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition” (Mark 7: 6-9). Note that Jesus said that it is in vain to worship him ... what fundamentalists seem to do. Fundamentalists say the gospel is the good news about the man Jesus. Simply put, the gospel is what Jesus preached and what he commanded his disciples to preach. We like to think that our nation is a Christian nation. How could our nation be a Christian nation with about 90 percent of the American families being dysfunctional; with churches being a haven for hypocrites; and religious teachers not teaching people how to do the things that Jesus and other biblical teachers said to do? How many so-called Christians do what Jesus and other biblical teachers said to do? Who are as perfect as Jesus said to be? Remember Jesus said, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). Jesus also said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say” (Luke 6:46). Jesus also said, “Cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also” (Matthew 23:26). This means essentially the same thing as something Jeremiah said: “Wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved.” (Jeremiah 4:14). Is your religious teacher making these things clear? Think about it. If we did either one of those things, our heart would be pure; we would be saved; we would be as perfect as Jesus said to be. And we would have peace and joy—what the Bible is all about. In an article appearing in the July, 2007, issue of NewsMax magazine, Dr. Laura Schlessinger said: “Our American society is becoming alarmingly ugly and dangerous. ... Our society has become a meaner, harsher, and more dangerous place than ever before. I don’t know what can turn it back.” The gospel of peace that Jesus preached and the things taught by other biblical teachers have the potential for turning it back. If we, individually and collectively, lived the kind of life that Jesus and the prophets of the Old Testament wanted their followers to live — the kind of life everyone inherently desires to live — peace and harmony would permeate the entire world.
